About 1.2 million of Duke Energy Florida’s roughly 1.8 million customers were without power as of 9 a.m. Monday with the company warning outages could climb as Hurricane Irma continues to whip the state.

Neil Nissan, spokesman for parent Duke Energy Corp. (NYSE:DUK), says the company has 8,000 workers staged in Florida and Georgia to work solely on power restoration. But he says as of 10 a.m., the crews cannot be deployed because the storm continues and it is not safe to work in the affected areas.
